About intercultural competence

As part of the campaign Culture of Respect, several webinars have been prepared. They concern ways of communication and cooperation with mutual respect and trust. They are conducted by experts from the University of Gdańsk: Dr. Habil. Natasza Kosakowska-Berezecka, Assoc. Prof. and Magdalena Żadkowska, Ph.D.

The third meeting was devoted to intercultural competencies. The experts, in conversation with the members of the community of the Medical University of Gdańsk, explained the way leading from prejudices to discrimination. They also pointed out that for a person to feel respected and safe as a member of a given group, it is necessary, on the one hand, to allow them to maintain their identity and individuality, and on the other hand, to appreciate their actions for the benefit of the group. As they said, the key to feeling a sense of being included, and therefore safe and fulfilled, is both being oneself and being aware of belonging to an organisation. The experts also presented a simple test to check the degree of one’s openness to diversity and the different stages one has to go through from denying diversity to accepting and supporting it.
